Content and thematic analysis of anonymized text messages sent to Right By You (RBY), a Missouri-based youth-focused sexual and reproductive health (SRH) navigation textline, from April 1, 2022 to October 31, 2023, examining informational and navigation needs around abortion, contraception, and pregnancy.
RBY received messages from 345 unique texters; 74 self-identified as minors (<18). Top needs were locating abortion providers, securing abortion funding, finding contraceptive care, and accessing contraception without parental involvement. Financial barriers and privacy concerns were recurring themes, especially among minors and those seeking later abortion care.
Most texters (n=210) did not report their age, limiting demographic analysis. The sample is limited to one Missouri-based service, reducing generalizability. Self-reported data may underrepresent the full scope of needs.
Digital-only SRH resources are insufficient for youth — personalized, real-time navigation support (e.g., text-based services) is needed to address privacy concerns, appointment logistics, and funding barriers. Clinicians and health systems should be aware that minors face compounded social and financial obstacles to abortion and contraceptive care.
