What was studied

A PRISMA-based systematic review of randomized controlled trials of systemic treatments for atopic dermatitis searched MEDLINE from inception to 21 December 2023 to determine how often patient clinical images are included in trial publications.

Key findings

Across 60 trials including 17,799 randomized patients, manuscripts shared 16 images depicting 6 patients, a sharing rate of 0.3‰.

Study limitations

Search was limited to MEDLINE and to predefined systemic therapies; the review was not registered and did not assess risk of bias or certainty, per its PRISMA checklist.

Clinical implications

Expect few or no before–after images in AD RCT manuscripts; consider providing your own visual aids when counseling patients about expected outcomes.
